{July 20, 2006}   Body Language

Most of times people are unconscious about gestures they do. However, it’s gotten to be an additional way to communicate nonverbally. Experts say that within a conversation 65% is made of wordless communication while the 35% are words. Body language is a language without spoken words, and is therefore called non verbal communication. As well as learn to understand and interpret body language of others. It is important to note that body language has different meanings in different cultures. How people can interpret body language depends on the situation, the culture, the relationship they have with the person as well as the gender of the other. This means that there is not one signal that has the same meaning all over the world. If people do not take this into account they may get themselves in some serious trouble!.

Body language is used especially to express feelings. For instance, if people do not like someone, it is often difficult to say that directly to the person. However, people can make it clear either intentionally or unintentionally through body language. People may say that they are angry through words, yet their body language may be saying loud and clear that they are not. This can be very confusing for the receiver. This usually describes   double messages – one message in words and an opposite message in body language. It is also difficult to lie or cover up  feelings through body language. People may give their true feelings away by not being aware of their body language.  As a consequence, people tend to doubt, or put a question mark behind, the spoken words if they do not correspond with the language of the body. Stated differently, the mouth can lie, but the body gestures always reveal the truth.

On the one hand, it has been argued that postures reveal different ways of reacting, but how can it happen? Generally, actions or movements are made of  parts of the body to express a variety of feelings and thoughts  about the situation someone  is facing at the moment. For example, if  people cross their  arms, it will show a defensive attitude or if they take their hand to their  mouths, they are probably telling a lie. On the other hand, culture is also related to wordless communication. That’s why some gestures differ from one place to another. For instance, to point out a person or an object, Venezuelan people  use their  mouth while  Peruvian or Colombian people move their  eyebrows, besides raising their heads . As a result, every culture has its own body language

Finally, being aware of the cues and signals sent to someone by others is a crucial skill, if people want to understand a person’s attitude towards someone, regardless of what they say, and determine where they come from. Moreover, it’s important to harmonize what people say with what they feel because it helps to improve relationships and to know the person who has in front of them.

{July 20, 2006}   A terrifying day in the bank

Three months ago, when I was in the bank , I had a terrifying experience. The incident ocurred in Banesco where I hardly ever go because of the enormous queues. Although I don’t go there to make big transactions, I’ve always  liked to go with someone else. However, this time was different. I took advantage the two hours free before going to work, and went straight to the bank alone to get information about a loan. It was about 11:30 am. I had already wasted more than an hour and a half, seating in a chair,  waiting for my turn impatiently. Suddendly, I heard someone who yelled “Don’t move, this’s a robbery” while he was pointing a old woman’s neck with a gun. There was a deep silence for about 10 minutes. All of clients were frightened. Nobody knew what it would happen. At first I thought I was already dead, because I could realize that they were three men. A short one was near the cashiers asking for the money, the other one in the middle of the bank watching around, and one more in the gateway. This last one hurried the others, because the alarms started ringing. When the short man picked the money, the old woman was released, even though she was still inside the bank, no weapons could hurt. Then, the watchman went out to see what was happening, it was too late. The thieves had already left the bank. So , the manager closed the door in order to wait for the police agents to ask for some questions. After that, we could leave. Despite  nobody was physically hurt, everybody was in shock.  I thought I would never go out the bank, at least alive, but fortunately it was just a fright, which taught me to value every minute of my existence, to thank God for the marvelous family I have, and not to go the bank anymore.

{July 3, 2006}   On my Own

Jenny More was born in February 1979. I’m known due to my short size, my American last name , despite the fact I’m Latin american, and because I stay sleepy almost the whole day. I was graduated in Information Technology in 2003. Besides, I’ve been working in a part time job as an Analyst in a Telecommunication Company since 2004. I’am also studying in the PED in the morning. At first, I thougth, I had to give  the university or the job up. However, to become an English teacher is very important for me, but supporting myself throughout my employment is a need. So, I had to planify my schedule correctly, and forget about enjoyment. I usually leave home at 6:00 a.m., and I’m back at 9:30 pm. Thus, I take advantage every free time to do my assignments, and rest where it’s possible. I wish weekends were longer in order to relax, and dedicate more time to study. In my opinion, even though, I usually face an exhausting day everyday  I always try to do my best, because I’m sure I’ll have a rewarding future.
